Managing Risk Factors in AI Answers

The fifth AVI Score dimension is defensive. It identifies what can go wrong when AI talks about your brand or category, from competitor dominance to factual errors that erode trust.

Why Risk Is a Separate Dimension

The first four AVI Score dimensions measure positive visibility: being present, being preferred, being cited, and driving action. Risk measures the opposite: what happens when AI answers work against you.

A brand can score well on Presence and still face serious risk if the AI consistently positions a competitor as the better choice. A brand can have strong Proof and still be undermined by outdated pricing information or discontinued product claims that the AI surfaces from old training data. Risk is the dimension that catches these threats before they cost you revenue.

The Three Categories of AI Risk

We organize AI visibility risks into three categories, each requiring different monitoring and response strategies.

  • Competitive Risk: Competitors are mentioned more frequently, described more favorably, or recommended more explicitly than your brand for the same queries. This is the most common risk category and often the hardest to address because it requires sustained content and reputation investment.
  • Accuracy Risk: AI generates factually incorrect information about your brand. This includes wrong pricing, discontinued products being recommended, outdated feature lists, or confused identities with similarly named brands. Accuracy risks can be technically addressed through better structured data and llms.txt files.
  • Narrative Risk: AI frames your category or your specific brand in a way that undermines your positioning. For example, if AI consistently describes your premium product as "expensive" rather than "premium," or if it positions your industry as declining when it is growing. Narrative risks require strategic content repositioning.

How Risk Is Measured

For each query in our test set, we analyze the AI response not just for your brand, but for the entire competitive landscape. This gives us a complete picture of the threats you face.

  • Competitor Mention Velocity: How frequently are competitors mentioned in your category queries? A rising competitor mention rate is an early warning signal.
  • Negative Sentiment Rate: What percentage of AI mentions include negative qualifiers, warnings, or unfavorable comparisons?
  • Factual Error Rate: How often does AI generate incorrect information about your brand? We verify against your actual product data, pricing, and features.
  • Brand Confusion Rate: Does AI confuse your brand with competitors or unrelated companies? This is common for brands with generic names or names shared across industries.
  • Category Narrative Score: How does AI frame your industry? Is it positioned as growing, stable, or declining? This affects all brands in the category.

Common Risk Patterns We Find

After auditing hundreds of brands, certain risk patterns appear repeatedly. Price-related risks are the most common: AI cites old pricing, applies the wrong currency, or compares prices without context (listing your enterprise product against a competitor's starter plan).

Another frequent pattern is the "Wikipedia effect." If your brand has a Wikipedia page with outdated information, AI models heavily weight that data because Wikipedia is treated as a highly authoritative source. An outdated competitor list, a historical controversy, or stale financial figures on your Wikipedia page can shape AI answers for months.

Competitor content strategy is the third common risk. When competitors publish comparative content (blog posts, review site profiles, comparison pages) that position themselves as superior, AI models absorb that framing. Your own silence on competitive positioning creates a vacuum that competitors fill.

Risk Mitigation Strategies

Risk mitigation combines proactive and reactive measures. Proactively, you need to ensure your own digital footprint is accurate, up-to-date, and tells the right story. Reactively, you need monitoring systems that catch problems early.

  • Keep your llms.txt file current with accurate product information, pricing, and feature descriptions. This is the most direct way to correct factual errors.
  • Monitor AI answers for your brand weekly, not quarterly. The landscape changes as models update their training data and retrieval indexes.
  • Update your Wikipedia page (or request corrections through proper channels) if it contains outdated information.
  • Publish comparative content on your own domain that positions your brand accurately against competitors. If you do not define the comparison, someone else will.
  • Build a "correction dossier": a structured document that clearly states what your brand does, what it does not do, current pricing, and common misconceptions. Share this with AI providers through their feedback mechanisms.
